Udaan Community Film Festival
Overview
The group Flying Birds was informally established in early 2005 at the AJK Mass Communication Research Centre, Jamia Millia Islamia. Later that same year, children affected by the Gujarat Riot joined it and developed some print designs based on poetry written by the Sufi poets Khusrau and Rumi. In 2006, the young women of urban slums of Delhi joined the group and through it, raised their voices and public awareness about the societal problems they faced. They produced short documentary films on issues important to their peer group and community. These addressed such real-life issues affecting them as girl child discrimination, inadequate health and education for women, eve-teasing, and domestic violence, as well as evolving gender roles. The group not only contiues to produce films through Community Media Initiative (CMI), but screens them in different areas to sensitize others to these issues and spread awareness.
Udaan Community Film Festival
The Udaan Community Film Festival is a convergence of art and cinema for social change. It is to bring younger minds in contact with their cities and heritage by providing support for creative expression of their dreams, ideas, feelings, and imaginations. The group produces the short documentary films and screens them during one day film festivals organized by it in collaboration with other non profit organizations and academic institutions within the community or from outside.
